Malt Office is a distributed collaborative space designed by Atelier 2M2 for the online aesthetic platform Malt. It is pre-set as a hybrid place with multiple functions. In addition to daily office work, it is also used for temporary activities such as art salons and small exhibitions.
The overall idea of Malt Office is to create infinite movement between “0” and “1”. The original conception originated from the study of Zeno’s views, the classical argument about the nature of “infinity” and the continuity of space and time: the existence of things is infinitely divisible, which means that it has infinite mass and zero mass at the same time.
The black box is regarded as the reverse engineering of the structural column. Through the orthogonal relationship with the structural column, the black box is penetrated by the column. As a spatial shelter, it eliminates the destructive interference of the column to the horizontal space, thus hiding it from sight. It is functionally set as an inert storage space, while forming a narrow foyer with the entrance to maintain internal privacy.
Atelier 2M2 is essentially a “skeptic.” In their context, the “self” has also become the “other,” an “object” that needs to be calmly “observed.” At the same time, in order to verify the uncertain cognition of the “realistic utopia,” they created a series of objects of justification with different personalities and positions (in commissioned projects or independent creations). The objective (non-subjective) justification of these objects further intensifies their skeptical stance.
Lingyuan Wang, co-founder of Atelier 2M2, founder of malt online aesthetic platform, member of N2 Multimedia Art Group, graphic designer, artist. Lingyuan Wang is an artist who walks between reality and abstraction: in reality, he is rational and orderly, focusing on the essence of the subject and following the rules to discover the eternal essence of things. In the abstract carrier (thought), he calmly observes the world, imagines and criticizes.
Cai Jingfeng, Art Director and Graphic Designer at Atelier 2M2.Cai approaches design through a framework of Cartesian rationality, grounding his practice in the systematic analysis of visual information’s coding logic and symbolic generation across the three dimensions of semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. He regards design as a pathway to ontological inquiry—engaging with the composition of form, the construction of meaning, and the activation of cognition. Between order and intuition, language and perception, he weaves a precise structural system that renders design a contemplative gaze and a philosophical response to the reality of existence.
Manling Wei, conceptual and strategic director of Atelier 2M2, co-editor-in-chief of malt online aesthetic Platform, graphic designer, artist and independent writer.
Manling Wei views the act of creativity as a phenomenological rescue (Rettung der Phänomene) in the sense of Plato. She is committed to synthesizing and exploring the conceptual and intellectual qualities of art or design works, and exploring the metaphysics triggered by the practice of creativity.
